Scenic Drives - Vineyards to Augusta
This is an all day tour and the distance travelled depends on how many deviations are taken. Minimum distance round trip is 220 kilometres.
It is suggested you travel on the Bussell highway to Metricup 27 kilometres south and turn right at the church. After a few kilometres you will come to the first of the vineyards. Wines produced in this area have won many awards in recent years.
At the t-junction of Caves road, turn left (south) and about 10 kilometres along a right hand turn will take you into Gracetown, Cowaramup Bay. Back to the main Caves road you again head south taking detours to the right towards the coast to such places as Prevelly (visit Wallcliffe House and the new church on the hill), Calgardup Reef and Redgate.
The Mammoth Cave is approximately 12 kilometres south of the Prevelly Park/Caves road junction and the Lake Cave two kilometres further south. Four kilometres south of Lake Cave is a turn to the right 'Boranup Drive' which is a highly recommended detour as it takes you through the majestic Karri trees. A wonderful display of wildflowers can be seen growing here in the spring. There is a lookout from where there is a good panorama of the sea and land around. Barbecue and picnic areas provided. This detour brings you back onto Caves road.
Hamelin Bay and Cosy Corner are north, a short distance off Caves road. Continue south along Caves road to the Jewel Caves, well worth a visit, before going on to Augusta.
A tour around the Augusta-Flinders Bay-Cape Leeuwin area returning from the lighthouse along the scenic drive of Skippy Rock road is superb, particularly in the wildflower season.
There are many interesting places to see around Augusta, including the historical museum, or the boat trip up the Blackwood river. Return home via Bussell highway, passing through Karridale, Margaret River and Cowaramup.
