Settlers Ridge Organic Wines
Settlers Ridge is a new winery tucked away behind the oldest winery in Margaret River. It is a small winery but with a philosophy to produce quality wines first and secondly as a bonus, to produce a fully accredited organic wine.
Wayne and Kaye Nobbs purchased the 101 acre property in 1994, originally part of a dairy farm in the heart of the Margaret River wine growing region. The property enjoys a picturesque, undulating landscape with a large area of remnant Marri and Jarrah forest. Heavy, gravely loam soils, perfect for viticulture, were planted with red globe table grapes and several wine grape varieties, using traditional organic methods.
In the past seven years Settlers Ridge have won more than 50 medals at wine shows, providing compelling evidence that organic techniques can produce high-quality wines. In fact every Shiraz produced has won either a gold or a silver medal in open competition (not just competing in an organic section).
Right from the outset, Settlers Ridge set out to produce 100% premium, organic wines. Their philosophy was to produce a product that was free from chemicals but would win awards at conventional wine shows. This winery has more than surpassed its objective as it has won more than thirty medals in four years including the Perth Royal Show and the Sheraton Wine Awards.
Settlers Ridge use only nature-based fertilizers in the vineyard and natural products for fungus control on the grapevines. By not using chemicals on the vines, the predator insects, like ladybird beetles, are not harmed and so are able to control any infestations that may occur. The weeds and natural grasses that are nitrogen fixing in the soil, are slashed and thrown under the vines to control weeds and provide mulch. This sustainable agriculture practice will ensure that the soil will be fertile for generations to come.
