Kouark Vineyard & Winery
Take a drive among the beautiful rolling hills south of Drouin and you will come across Kouark Vineyard and Winery. Here can be found one of Gippsland s agricultural success stories. Phil and Jane Gray operate a boutique winery supplied with fruit grown and nurtured on what was once their dairy farm.
The transition from milk to wine was both a challenge and an adventure for this family who ten years down the track feel that they have grown up with the emerging wine and food culture of Gippsland.
In 1997, Phil and his wife Jane planted ten acres of vines, Phil s research had led him to the conclusion that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes were temperate varieties, ideally suited to the area.
However going one step further Phil took his newly acquired knowledge along with his experience and intuition adding Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, two varieties not normally grown in cool climates. A small plot of Pinot Gris has been added to the vineyard, it s also proving to be successful.
For me, winemaking was a logical progression from growing the grapes. I look out the window and see the grapes growing, then I go to a restaurant and see a bottle of my wine on a table and I know I even put the label on the bottle .
The desire to learn about winemaking in order to be able to take the fruit through the entire process drove Phil through a regime of study allowing him to fulfill the end goal of growing and making his own wine.
Today, Kouark produces award winning wines, has a strong local following and is building a reputation for consistently high quality wines.
We invite you to visit our Cellar Door which is an integrated component of the winery.
