St Helens History Room
St Helens History Room is located on Tasmania’s north-east coast and offers a unique collection.
The History Room next to the town library houses a collection of Aboriginal, early settlers, Chinese miners, tin mining and timber mills memorabilia. There are also interesting items on boat building, fishing and narrated history. Videos and the Burns collection of photographs and books, which were donated to the State in 1985 can also be found. A feature of the room is a working model at 1/24th scale of the famous Anchor Mine water wheel and stampers.
The collection relates primarily to the Portland/Break O’Day Municipality but there is a general coverage of the State and the once-thriving tin mining and rural-support areas of Moorina, Welborough, Pyengana, Poimena, Lottah, Goulds Country and Goshen. There is also a comprehensive collection of genealogy of north-east Tasmania. Guided tours in your own car or bus are available.
St Helens History Room is approximately two-hours’ drive east of Launceston (166 kilometres/103 miles).
