Swansea Bark Mill and Tavern
The Swansea Bark Mill and Museum is located at Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast. Swansea is a two-and-a-half hour drive from Hobart (134 kilometres) and Launceston (134 kilometres).
The multi-award winning Swansea Bark Mill and Museum features Australia’s only restored black wattle bark mill. The fully working mill demonstrates how bark from local black wattle trees was once crushed for export across the world. The bark is high in tannic acid – the basic ingredient used in tanning. The Mill was established in 1885 and continued operation until the early 1960s.
You can explore the history of Tasmania’s east coast in the Museum, or visit the Bark Mill Tavern and enjoy fresh Tasmanian produce including east coast seafood and wood fired pizzas. The Swansea Bark Mill and Museum is open daily and has access for people with a disability.
The attraction is currently closed due to renovations and is expected to re-open again approximately the middle of July.
