Home Hill
Home Hill is the home of former Australian Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, located in Devonport. The House was built in 1916, one year after Joseph’s marriage to Dame Enid Lyons. Except for a period of five years it remained their home for the rest of their lives.
Joseph Lyons was Premier of Tasmania from 1923 to 1928. In 1929 he entered Federal Parliament and from 1932 until 1939 was Prime Minister of Australia. He died in office in April 1939. He is one of two Australians to have been Premier of his state before becoming Prime Minister of the Commonwealth. Since Federation Dame Enid Lyons was elected in 1943 and became the first woman member of the House of Representatives. In 1949 she was sworn in as the first woman member of Federal Cabinet. Dame Enid retired from Parliament in 1951 because of ill health. Home Hill is as Dame Enid left it and contains many interesting and historic mementoes of the life of a Prime Minister.
