Innes National Park

Looking for a holiday tip from a local?

Yorke Peninsula is where South Australians love to holiday and Innes National Park is the jewel in the peninsula’s crown.

With a magnificent coastline ranging from pristine, sandy, sheltered coves to still salt lakes and majestic cliffs pounded by the surging waves of the Southern Ocean, it is no wonder this park has won the hearts of locals.

A paradise for surfers, hikers, birdwatchers, anglers and campers alike, Innes offers the perfect place to relax and listen to the waves crashing on the beach or wind whispering through the sheoak trees.

Take a walk back in time through old Inneston village where gypsum was mined in the 1930s, today a deserted township, home to 12 houses, a restored post office and the ruins of a store, factory, bakery and stables.

See the remains of the rusted Ethel Shipwreck which sank near Ethel Beach in 1904 or spot Western Grey Kangaroos, Emus or some of parks 140 bird species such as the Malleefowl and shy Western Whipbird.

Bushwalk along the Thomson-Pfitzner Plaster Trail or Inneston historic walk and learn about the resourcefulness of the people and resilience of the plants, since European occupation. The story continues at Stenhouse Bay Lookout Trail with spectacular vistas of rugged cliffs and islands.

There are five cosy cottages available for holiday rental in old Inneston township. Phone the National Park Visitor Centre in Innes on (08) 8854 3200 for details and bookings. Fuel and refreshments can be purchased from Innes Park Trading Post and Rhino’s Tavern.

From November 2008 to June 2009 Pondalowie Campground, the largest of nine campgrounds, will be closed for redevelopoment. This temporary closure will limit campsite availability, particularly school hoildays and the Easter long weekend. Alternate camping options should be planned for in these periods as camping is only permitted in designated campsites. For information about other camping options in the area contact the Yorke Peninsula Visitor Information Centre on (08) 88543200.
