Murray River National Park
Imagine fishing or camping under shady gum trees, watching the sun sparkle on the Murray River as it slowly makes it way towards the ocean.
Not only is the Murray River the lifeblood of South Australia providing much needed water, but it is also a playground for holidaymakers and a haven for native animals.
This stunning region is best experienced at three areas which make up Murray River National Park: Katarapko, Lyrup Flats and Bulyong Island.
A favourite with canoeists, anglers and campers, Katarapko is just four kilometres from the Riverland town of Berri. Explore its peaceful backwaters by canoe, relax on the riverbank at dusk and dawn and watch numerous waterbirds, hire a houseboat and cruise the river or immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature camping along the mighty Murray.
Opposite the town of Lyrup, Lyrup Flats offers wonderful opportunities to camp, fish, take a ride in a dinghy or stroll along the floodplain.
Bulyong Island is another peaceful getaway, not far from Renmark. Western Grey Kangaroos, Emus, Pelicans, Kingfishers, Parrots have made the island their home while small boat users, houseboaters and canoeists are regular visitors.
Keep an eye out for Long Neck Tortoises which nest along the banks of Ral Ral Creek and an ear out for the distinctive banjo-like twang of aptly named Eastern Banjo Frogs.
