Monument To Soldier Settlement Scheme
The Monument to Soldier Settlement is situated at the site of the Operational Headquarters for development of the War Service Land Settlement Scheme. 250,000 acres of virgin scrub was developed into farmland.
The Sir Cecil Hinks plough is a symbol of the land clearing that took place in late 1940 and early 1950 on Kangaroo Island. Sir Cecil Hinks was Minister of Lands during the major period of operations.
All that remains of the camp is the gantry that was used to unload the trucks and all the equipment as it arrived and some concrete blocks where the workshops were.
The former Kangaroo Island Research Centre is now home to forestry operations on Kangaroo Island and houses a pine log milling plant. Housing is privately owned. The former administration building has been converted into Timber Creek Lodge tourist accommodation.
