Hastwell and Lightfoot
Hastwell and Lightfoot is a partnership of old friends Mark and Wendy Hastwell and Martin and Jill Lightfoot. Happily, after 18 years in business together, we are still old friends.
The vineyard started back in late 1987 with the observation, "there has got to be something better to do than work in an office for the rest of your life". We found there was.
In May 1988 we bought our first property on the beautiful northern slopes of McLaren Vale. This purchase was 22 acres and vineyard-less because the original vineyard had been pulled out in the famous vine pull of 1982.
With the aid of the best viticultural advisor for miles around, Geoff Hardy, we started learning the job. By November 1988 we had gone from a bare paddock to a 13 acre planted, trellised and irrigated vineyard.
In 1989, as luck would have it, a 40 acre property became available 100 meters further up the hill. It was meant for us, so we started the process all over again but this time with enough knowledge to know to develop it in small parcels.
