Coriole Vineyards
Coriole Vineyards was established by the Lloyd family in 1967 overlooking the McLaren Vale region and Gulf of St Vincent. The area is one of Australia's oldest and best known wine regions.
The flagship wine is Coriole Shiraz, produced since 1970. This wine featured in James Halliday's Classic Wines of Australia. The wine from the oldest vineyard, planted in 1920, is bottled seperately as Lloyd Reserve Shiraz. This wine is classified according to the Langton's Classification as excellent. Shiraz is about 55 per cent of the vintage crush.
More recently Coriole led the way in Australia with Italian varieties, planting Sangiovese in 1985. The major white variety is Chenin Blanc. This variety has a history in the McLaren Vale, where it was previously known as a sherry variety, Albillo, until named correctly in 1975.
Many of the vines on the 35 hectares (88 acres) property were planted in the late 1960s.
Simon White, winemaker, uses traditional open fermentation with hand plunging for red wines, followed by maturation in French or American oak. The viticulturist is Russell Altus.
At Coriole the old vines are planted in contours around hills and valley. Most of the soils are red earths over limestone, or classic terra rosa. The soils can be quite shallow over the limestone or on top of the hills, and are prone to water stress unless carefully managed. Ironstone is also prevalent. Most of the Shiraz vines are pruned to a traditional "rod and spur" method and average yields are around eight tonne per hectare (three tonne per acre). The wines are sold throughout Australia and in many countries worldwide.
Coriole has a landmark cottage garden spread around a heritage listed barn and cottage dating from the 1860s and constructed of local ironstone.
The spectacular views from Coriole are framed by an ancient range of hills running down to the sea.
Wine is not the only passion of the Lloyd family. Premium olive oils and vinegars are also produced. Coriole was at the forefront of the rebirth of the olive industry, first bottling and marketing olive oil in 1989. Olives are sourced from surrounding olive groves, including one at Coriole.
Coriole also owns The Woodside Cheese Wrights, a cheese factory in Woodside, South Australia, in the Adelaide Hills.
The McLaren Vale wine region lies at the top of the Fleurieu Peninsula, which extends into the Southern Ocean. The region lies south of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, which is the major wine growing State of Australia. The first vines were planted there in the 1840s, shortly after European settlement in South Australia.
