Hummock Hill Lookout

Overlooking the eastern end of Whyalla, Hummock Hill was developed by BHP as a gift to the city to commemorate BHPs centenary year and was handed over to the City Council during the 1986 South Australian Jubilee 150 Royal visit.

Hummock Hill was the site of the first European settlement at the turn of the twentieth century. During World War Two it serviced as a gun battery and observation post, development of the lookout utilised the old gun emplacements that can still be seen today. It affords an unequalled view of Whyalla and the vast One Steel operations, Whyalla foreshore and marina, across Spencer Gulf to the Southern Flinders Ranges and nearby Point Lowly Lighthouse and the Santos Plant at Port Bonython, and westward towards the iron ore rich Middleback Ranges.

A one way sealed road takes vehicles to the top of the hill.
