National Railway Museum Port Adelaide

Experience a style of train travel that is no longer available today, at the National Railway Museum.

The museum operates from two sites - at Lipson Street Port Adelaide and on the foreshore at nearby Semaphore. The museum at Port Adelaide has more than 100 exhibits within two huge pavilions and an 1870s heritage listed good shed. It represents railway operations from State, Commonwealth and private operators on the three major railway gauges used throughout Australia.

Interactive displays include safe operating practices, the role of women in railways, and the famous 'Tea and Sugar' train that served railway families on the barren Nullarbor Plain. Activities include exploring the Woodville signal cabin, viewing the model railway, and taking a train ride (included in the entry fee). The Break of Gauge Shop has Thomas the Tank Engine toys and a large range of souvenirs, videos, DVDs and books for sale.

Take a coastal train ride on the Semaphore and Fort Glanville Tourist Railway, regularly departing near the Semaphore jetty from around 11am during the school holidays.

The National Railway Museum is home to the Friends of Thomas the Tank Engine event during the July school holidays. It also caters for celebrations and children's birthday parties. Adelaide’s unique function centre for conference dinners, corporate events, weddings, product launches, networking events and much more. As an added highlight, by arrangement, trains can bring groups from Adelaide right into the museum for major functions.
