Byfield State Forest
Byfield State Forest marks the start of the largest undeveloped area on the central Queensland coast. The endemic Byfield fern and Byfield grevillea thrive here. Ancient cycads survive among rugged mountains and beside pine plantations. Waterpark Creek is great for birdwatching. Spy azure kingfishers flitting over the water's surface or listen for the distictive call of the wompoo fruit-dove. Camping is permitted at three sites. Dogs on leashes are allowed only at Red Rock campground. Horses are permitted in some areas. Estuarine crocodiles have been seen in Waterpark Creek and at Red Rock - so be croc wise!
