Excelsior Reserve
Excelsior Reserve extends from Castle Hill to Northmead covering some 142 hectares of natural bushland and providing for a range of recreational uses. It borders the Cumberland State Forest. It is home to a wide diversity of plant and animal life, with walking tracks that lead to ridges and gullies with beautiful scenery. Creeks gurgle over moss-covered boulders where the sound of frogs, cicadas and a myriad of birdcalls characterise Australian bush.
The reserve forms part of 1540 hectares set aside in 1804 for pasturing cattle and was known as Baulkham Hills Common. The land remained relatively unsettled although bushrangers were reported to use the gorge to hide out.
