Toonumbar Dam
Toonumbar Dam was built across Iron Pot Creek in 1972. The construction of Toonumbar Dam followed local representations from people wanting to conserve water; control flows in Iron Pot Creek, reduce flood risk and provide a reliable water supply. Storage capacity is 11,000 megalitres with a catchment area of 9,800 hectares. Maximum water depth is 34 metres. The wall is 44 metres high and at the crest it is 229 metres in length.
Access
Toonumbar Dam is around 31 km west of Kyogle on sealed and gravel roads.
Fishing
Toonumbar Dam is regularly stocked with Australian Bass & East Coast Cod. This location has a reputation for producing good numbers of bass at times. Its reputation as an edge fishery is well deserved.
Locals boast that the dam has the best bass fishing on the North Coast! East Coast Cod are totally protected. A NSW Fishing Licence is required to fish at Toonumbar Dam. Bag limits apply.
Facilities
Near the dam wall there is a public access area with picnic tables, toilets and barbecues. A small well maintained Golf Course is located at the Dam, fees apply.
Accommodation is available at Toonumbar Waters Retreat Ph: 02 66339135. Camping is permitted at Bells Bay with a small fee required to assist with maintaining the facilities here. Bells Bay Camping Ground is a secluded in magnificent forest, this popular spot is for people who enjoy outdoor camping life with basic amenities, but it has access to all the features of Toonumbar Dam itself, which offers superb picnic facilities, bush walking, boating and fishing.
Facilities include shelter sheds, toilets, rainwater tanks, barbecues, jetty and boat ramp. The local fish-stocking group provided these.
Boating
Boats can be launched near the dam wall or at Bells Bay.
*Use extreme caution when launching here as there is a steep drop below the boat launching area. Toonumbar Dam is open to all forms of boating, however a speed limit of 8 knots applies throughout the Toonumbar Dam
