Thunderbolts Hideout
Thunderbolt’s hideout consists of a number of large granite boulders which forms two caves - one used for stabling the bushranger's horse and the otherused as a camping place. Frederick Ward, better known as 'Captain Thunderbolt' the bushranger was well known throughout the Tenterfield district.
There are many known caves and hideouts in northern New England, however, most are now inaccessible. Ward began his bushranging career after escaping from the notorious Cockatoo Island Prison where he was serving a sentence for horse stealing. His career ended when he was shot by a police trooper at Uralla
where he is buried. After climbing to the top of the hideout, a very good view of the surrounding area can be seen, exactly the kind of view that Captain Thunderbolt was most interested in.
