Waragil Studios
Waragil Studios in Blackheath is the workplace and the exhibition space for the paintings, prints and ceramics of award-winning artists Jan Ashby and John Caldwell. Whilst their art continues to be shown in established galleries throughout Australia, the largest selection is to be found here.
John and Jan share an inspiration for the natural world and their work reflects this. They travel regularly, camping on location and gathering the reference material for the art imagery which is completed later in the studio.
Jan Ashby's paintings, drawings and sculptures cover a range of subject matter including still life, landscape and figurative compositions and she has developed a particular interest in the depiction of native flora in its natural habitat. The brilliance of the kiln-fired colour and the mastery of her hand-painted technique results in a uniqueness for each piece.
John Caldwell has gained wide recognition as one of Australia's leading landscape artists. While his paintings mostly consist of works on paper, they range widely in scale and subject matter. Location-based series of images for major touring exhibitions have included Antarctica, Northern France and Cornwall and the granite country of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland.
