Majestic Natural Haven
One of the world's largest and most scenic natural harbours, Macquarie Harbour is skirted by mountains clad in Huon pine. Early convicts and whalers named its entrance Hells Gates, but the vista more closely resembles heaven as the Gordon and other rivers flow into a vast and majestic anchorage.
Strahan – for many this name evokes a place with the true spirit of independence – of 19th century piners and miners, and 20th century protesters who stopped the damming of the wild Franklin River.
