Hardwicke Bay initially evolved as a small shack settlement for the locals on weekends and a base for professional fisherman in the 1940's. The council opened land up in the 1960's and a farmer subdivided his land in the 1980's. Today the Bay is rapidly developing with permanent and holiday dwellings.

Story of Interest:

In the 1950's a fisherman built a tin and brush dwelling around a tree, on the beach. He, his wife and several children lived there for sometime. Their original means of transport was a Harley Davidson Motorcycle and box sidecar, which was used for supplies, carting water and transporting fish to the market.
