Enjoy Charters Towers
Historic Charters Towers lies 90 minutes west of Townsville, its gracious heritage buildings a shrine to old gold rush days. Once the most populated town in Queensland outside of Brisbane, Charters Towers is almost as rich in history as it is in gold. Charter Towers was once dubbed "The World" due to its sophisticated multi- culturalism and magnificent civic buildings of the era, including the Stock Exchange which has been preserved within the historic mining precinct.
A city built on gold, Charters Towers flourished during the bustling gold boom of the late 1800s and by the turn of the century it had earned the distinction of Queensland's second largest city and the honour of having one of the first few regional Stock Exchanges built in 1888.
