The News, March 1992. The Australian Shakespeare Company presents Shakespeare Under the Stars in the Royal Botanic Gardens. This year's production, originally adapted and directed by Glenn Elston, is Twelfth Night, or What You Will, one of Shakespeare's classic romantic comedies. On the seacoast of Illyria, a ship is wrecked. Emerging from the waves like a bedraggled Venus is a young woman from Messaline, Viola. Believing her twin brother to have been drowned, she decides to insinuate herself into Duke Orsino's court in the guise of a young man. Orsino, for his part, is melancholy with love for the Countess Olivia, feelings that are unreturned. Orsino accordingly employs the young man, Cesario (Viola in disguise), to plead on his behalf. The inevitable happens: Olivia becomes very much taken with the Duke's ambassador of love while Viola finds she has fallen under Orsino's spell. To complicate matters further, Olivia's Steward, Malvolio, has amorous ambitions in regard to his employer, Olivia. With twists and turns, hilarious confusions, and several farcical adventures which, like the children's games they are, 'end in tears', this rollicking production will delight a broad audience from older teenagers and young adults to families.
