Views: An Exhibition of Digital Images by Harvey Schiller
A selection of recent works by South Australian digital image artist Harvey Schiller will be presented at the Rosemount Estate Cellar Door's Barrel Vault Gallery.
The images begin life as photos taken by Harvey. In this exhibition they have been drawn from a great swathe of regional South Australia including McLaren Vale. Locals will surely recognise Primo Estate's magnificent façade, the seafront residence at Sellicks Beach depicted in 'Flightpath' and the pair of pictures that feature a window from Russel's Pizza Place at Willunga. Other locations represented in the exhibition include Burra, Langhorne Creek, Kapunda, Yorke Peninsula, Adelaide Hills and Adelaide.
Vivid colour and strong shape along with atmospheric cloud and dramatic lighting characterise Harvey's larger works while the smaller pictures work as laid back meditations often featuring an enticing view through a window. A wry humour is also present in many of the pictures, however beauty and balanced composition in one form or another is the prevailing concern.
Two recent series of works, Chess and Gargoyles, shows Harvey has a willingness to explore further the nature of landscapes and subject matter. More surreal than other works, these pictures allude to, respectively, epic heroism and medieval fantasy.
