Australian Open and Surfing Lifestyle Festival
The Australian Open surfing event in March 2009 heralds the return of Men’s Pro Surfing to Sydney after a five year hiatus.
Seventy female and 190 male competitors are expected to sign up for the six star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event, which has prize money of US$120,000 in the men’s contest and US$35,000 in the women’s event. At the main competition venue, North Cronulla Beach, the famed break of ‘The Alley’ will serve as the prime competition bank.
A living legend of Australian surfing and 1999 World title holder, Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo is the patron of the Australian Open. Occy is Cronulla born and bred, launching his 25 year surfing career from the area.
Cronulla will also come alive with Australia’s largest surfing lifestyle festival during the competition period, featuring food, live music, extreme sports demonstrations and surfing product displays in nearby Dunningham Park.
